Well...what can I say about waves...too much for this intro but you will see from the pictures that I love them and love painting them...More
Wave Studies
From a child, I have been fascinated with waves, the power of them, the beauty and their majesty. They all follow rules laid down in creation but these rules are so complex based on the wind, the angle of the beach, rocks, cliffs and many more factors that despite a given set of conditions would all behave the same way yet their randomness seems amazing. How can something that must obey the laws of nature appear repetitive and yet appear random at the same time. It is because these laws are so complex.
I drive my wife crazy with my fascination with them, which is almost an obsession but I like to think of it as a love of an amazing part of God’s creation that depicts His power and majesty so well. I can sit for hours just staring at waves. Providing it is warm enough, I love being in the ocean being tossed around by them, although a couple of times I have experienced the extreme power of them too much and needed rescuing!
I take hundreds of pictures every time there are decent waves and have thousands of wave pictures. Since getting into painting I have always wanted to paint waves and have studied wave artists such EJ Robinson, Roy Long, Andrew Tischler and Samuel Earp all of whose work I admire and aspire to paint like.
Some of these paintings are more sketches or studies as they have been part of my journey in understanding the nature of waves. I have looked at waves for hours at a time and been fascinated by them all my life but being able to paint them needed a whole new approach. I wanted to not so much paint full blown pictures every time as produce studies of different types of waves and foam patterns and how the light affects the waves and other surroundings like the angle of the sea bed, rocks and cliffs etc. with the intention of sometime incorporating them into fully composed paintings with the other elements of rocks and cliffs etc. This approach considerably aided my learning process and was a lot of fun.
On this page and site you will see a mixture of Wave Studies, full blown paintings and paintings of coastal scenes with waves being an integral part of the seascape.
Prints are available on request of most common sizes from these original paintings.
